Η υπηρεσία με την οποία είναι δυνατή η άμεση, ελεύθερη και χωρίς περιορισμούς προσπέλαση ηλεκτρονικού ακαδημαϊκού υλικού, κυρίως ακαδημαϊκών άρθρων, ονομάζεται Open Αccess. Τα Aνοιχτής Πρόσβασης Ιατρικά Περιοδικά (Open Access Medical Journals) είναι διαθέσιμα στον οποιοδήποτε μέσω πρόσβασης στο internet. Κάποια επιδοτούνται από προγράμματα και είναι δωρεάν ενώ κάποια άλλα απαιτούνε καταβολή ενός αντιτίμου για τους συγγραφείς. Υπάρχουν διάφορες κατηγορίες Open Access Journals.

Open access (OA) means immediate, free and unrestricted online access to digital scholarly material, primarily peer-reviewed research articles in scholarly journals. OA was made possible by the advent of the Internet.

Open Access Journals are scholarly journals that are available to the reader “without financial or other barrier other than access to the internet itself.” Some are subsidized, and some require payment on behalf of the author.
The subsidized ones are financed by an academic institution or a government information center; those requiring payment are typically financed by money made available to researchers for the purpose from a public or private funding agency, as part of a research grant. There have also been several modifications of open access journals that have considerably different natures:

A newly popular variation on open access journals is the Hybrid Open Access Journal. This refers to a journal where only some of the articles are open access. This status typically requires the payment of a publication fee (also called a processing fee) to the publisher.

Delayed open access journals are journals in which the free availability of the content is available, but only after several months, with the immediate availability being limited to subscribers. By its nature, it applies only to electronic versions of journals. This variation on open access does not meet the standards for a true open access journal, and such journals are not included in the lists of open access journals, such as DOAJ.
