To MIT OpenCourseWare είναι μια προσπάθεια του πασίγνωστου Πανεπιστημίου της Μασαχουσέτης – MIT να μεταφέρει και να διαθέσει δωρεάν online μέχρι το 2007 όλο το εκπαιδευτικό υλικό που χρησιμοποιείται σε αυτό για τις βασικές σπουδές των φοιτητών του. Το εγχείρημα ανακοινώθηκε το 2002, και σήμερα στις σελίδες του project θα βρει χιλιάδες cources διαθέσιμα για το κοινό:
MIT OpenCourseWare (MIT OCW) is an initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to put all of the educational materials from its undergraduate- and graduate-level courses online, free and openly available to anyone, anywhere, by the end of the year 2007. MIT OpenCourseWare can be considered as a large-scale, web-based publication of MIT course materials.
Το εγχείρημα παρότρυνε και άλλα ιδρύματα να κάνουν διαθέσιμα το εκπαιδευτικό τους υλικό ως open educational resources. Το 2005 το ΜΙΤ μαζί με κάποια από τα παραπάνω ιδρύματα δημιουργήσαν το OpenCourseWare Consortium μέσω του οποίο προσπαθούνε να αυξήσουν τη ποσότητα και να βλετιώσουν την ποσότητα του διαθέσιμου “ανοιχτού” εκπαιδευτικού υλικού, καθώς να σχηματίσουν νέα, πιο αποδοτικά μοντέλα έκδοσης “ανοιχτού” εκπαιδευτικού υλικού.

MIT is working hard on other ways to extend OpenCourseWare’s reach. In January, Universia, a Madrid-based consortium of universities, approached MIT about translating the material into Spanish and Portuguese. MIT signed a deal to authorize and vet the translations, and the first 25 courses will be available this month. The university has received similar requests from the Middle East, Ukraine, and Mongolia, but it won’t forge any more official partnerships until it sees how the Universia deal goes.
